Why would I use this when I already have Open With? |
|
Open With is much less flexible than BetterOpenWith; it limits you to sending files only to certain applications, and if you want a different app, you have to go find it yourself. With BetterOpenWith, the apps are always there, all the time. BetterOpenWith lets your Mac do what you want it to do, not what it tells you you can do.
With BetterOpenWith you can email any file as an attachment, or inspect a file using TextEdit or HexEdit or some other editor, with just one click. You can do some of these things with Open With, but it won't give you the consistent usefulness that BetterOpenWith does. Also, BetterOpenWith lets you launch applications that aren't on the dock, without having to look for them; a feature that Open With won't give you.

Why does nothing
happen when I send [some document] to [some
application]? |
| Most applications are designed to open
only certain types of files. For example, TextEdit opens .txt. and
.rtf files. But if forced to, TextEdit can open
many types of files. (Try sending a .pdf file to QuickTime Player!) But
other applications just look at the file type and give up if it's not
one they open. For example, Acrobat Reader will just give up if you send
it a text file -- it only opens .pdf files. So
don't fret if the application doesn't want to open the file -
it's always worth a try.
Also, some things the Mac just won't do; for example, applications that run in the Classic
environment will not open files that reside on
SMB shares -- BetterOpenWith can't do anything about that.

How do I uninstall BetterOpenWith? |
| If you still have the
installer, just launch the installer and select "Remove". If you do not
have the installer, you can download it from the BetterOpenWith home page.
The installer will remove BetterOpenWith, no matter what version you have installed.
